A Technical uses an ailment
Technical damage comes from striking an afflicted target with a compatible attack. It gives you another way to pressure enemies when their normal weaknesses are inconvenient or absent. Applying an ailment and exploiting it are separate actions, so plan who performs each job.
A Technical is not automatically a knockdown at the start of Royal. Do not plan a guaranteed Baton Pass around an early Technical hit. Billiards upgrades improve this system, with rank 4 making eligible Technical hits knock enemies down.
Start with a few reliable pairings
Learn a small set of combinations before building an entire stock around ailments. The following are baseline pairings; the Knowing the Heart book adds further combinations later. The attack still needs to be appropriate for the target’s affinities.

| Ailment | Compatible attack |
|---|---|
| Burn | Wind or Nuclear |
| Freeze | Physical or Nuclear |
| Shock | Physical or Nuclear |
| Sleep | Any damaging attack |
| Fear | Psychokinesis |
Check immunity and recovery
Bosses and other enemies can resist ailments. An ailment skill that fails repeatedly is not a dependable route to extra turns. Switch plans rather than spending the party’s entire turn trying to force the same setup.
Some ailments end when the target is hit. Sleep, for example, gives you an opening but does not survive the follow-up attack. Use the action you created for meaningful damage or control. Be careful with melee attacks on Shocked targets, since Shock can transfer to the attacker.
