Negotiation & Recruitment

Use a Hold Up to recruit a Persona and recognize the cases that need a different approach.

Reach a Hold Up

Recruitment begins with a Hold Up, not with defeating every enemy. Knock down the targets and choose negotiation when you want a new Persona. Check your stock before entering a long infiltration so a successful conversation does not immediately become an inventory problem.

Ordinary recruitment is constrained by Joker’s level until relevant abilities change the rules. A promising Shadow may therefore be worth recording for later rather than repeatedly attempting a recruitment you cannot yet complete.

Choose what you want from the conversation

Recruitment, money and items are different negotiation goals. Read the prompt before confirming. The enemy’s personality influences its response to your answers, so use the displayed personality as a clue rather than treating every conversation as the same sequence of choices.

The Sun Confidant changes negotiation options as it progresses. Open Yoshida’s recorded abilities when planning those upgrades; do not assume an advanced negotiation option is available from the beginning of a new save.

Recognize special cases

Treasure Demons are special recruitment opportunities and useful fusion ingredients. Their behavior differs from ordinary Shadows: they can flee quickly, and negotiating successfully does not use the same personality exchange.

Savage enemies, recognizable as stronger red-aura Shadows, need their HP reduced sufficiently before they will negotiate. Not every boss or scripted encounter is recruitable. If a request has a special completion rule, use that request’s instructions rather than ordinary recruitment advice.
