Reading Character Talents

Separate actions, scaling, conditions and upgrades before deciding how a Character fits into your party.

Start with the action

A Character’s talents describe what they can do. Read the action before the numbers: an attack in front of the Character, an effect that follows the active Character, and a passive bonus ask for different kinds of play.

The Character directory separates combat talents, passive talents and Constellations. Begin with the Normal Attack, Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst. Then read the passives that modify them. A familiar weapon type does not mean two Characters use their actions in the same way.

For a concrete example, Kaeya’s Frostgnaw deals Cryo damage in front of him. Glacial Waltz creates icicles that follow the Character and deal Cryo damage along their path. The first description tells you where to aim; the second tells you that position and duration matter after casting.

Read the numbers in context

A talent table contains several kinds of values. A damage percentage, an Energy cost, a cooldown and a duration are not interchangeable. Read the row label and its unit before comparing two numbers.

Keep the talent level fixed when comparing scaling. A table’s higher columns can include levels reached through bonuses; their presence is not a promise that every level is a normal upgrade you can purchase.

Frostgnaw illustrates the distinction: its damage coefficient increases across talent levels, while its listed cooldown remains six seconds. Increasing a damage coefficient does not, by itself, make an action available more often. Nor is a coefficient the final damage number: equipment, effects and the target also matter.

Find the conditions and limits

Read effect descriptions as a sequence: what triggers it, who receives it, what changes, and when it stops. Pay attention to a named attack type, an affected opponent, a maximum count or a restriction on stacking.

Kaeya’s first Constellation increases the CRIT Rate of his Normal and Charged Attacks against opponents affected by Cryo. That wording does not grant the same bonus to every attack, or against every target. His Glacial Heart passive also limits the additional Elemental Particles that Frostgnaw can produce per use.

When text is conditional, first ask whether your intended sequence satisfies the condition. A large bonus that your actions never activate contributes nothing to that plan.

Separate the upgrade systems

Character level and ascension, combat talent levels, and Constellations are separate information in a kit. Compare the same state when reading a reference or an example. Kaeya’s third Constellation adds levels to Frostgnaw; it is not the same upgrade as raising his Character level.

Before investing, write one sentence describing the action you need the Character to perform. Then check its scaling, timing, activation conditions and relevant upgrades. This is a way to understand a kit, not a universal talent-priority order or a recommendation to pursue Constellations.
